Easter Holy Week – Sunday-the Resurrection of Jesus Christ

On this special Sunday, before sunrise, while the sky was still dark, the earth shook and an angel of the Lord descended, rolling back the massive heavy stone sealing Jesus’ tomb and sat upon it. The Roman soldiers were paralyzed with fear and fell to the earth. When they recovered, they fled. (Matthew 27:1, John 20:1)

Not long after, Mary Magdalene arrived at the sepulcher or tomb, along with other women – Mary the mother of James, Salome, and others – bringing the spices they had prepared. And found the stone already rolled back. (Mark 16:1, Luke 24:10)

Suddenly, an angel appeared and said,

“Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen!”

The women were filled with both fear and joy. They ran to tell the disciples. (Luke 24:5-6)

Mary Magdalene finds Peter and John, who rush to the tomb. Looking inside they saw the empty tomb and linens folded on the bed but left confused and heartbroken. They thought someone had stolen Jesus’ body.

Mary stayed behind, weeping – in her agony of love and grief remembered only the words “He is not here.” She failed to comprehend the gladsome meaning of the angel’s proclamation. As she wept she turned and saw a man. Thinking he was the gardener, she asked him, Where have they taken Jesus’ body? He answered only,

“Mary!”

Immediately she knew it was the Savior! He had been resurrected! The risen Savior stood before her. Mary was the first witness to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. (John 20:11-16)

That day, graves were opened (Matt 27:52), angels testified, and the world was forever changed. For now, ALL who were ever born will be resurrected!

This special day – Sunday – the ‘first’ day of the week – became the new sabbath day for all Christians to gather and worship our Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ our Savior. Christians everywhere believe Christ suffered for our sins so we can repent, and that He triumphed over death, so all will be resurrected!

The Purpose of these Peg-People and retelling of the Easter Story:

We have been seeped in the traditions of our forefathers and I love them for it! And I am also grateful for continued learning and understanding of scripture and culture so that I might have a deeper understanding of Holy Week and what our Savior accomplished and taught us during His final days on earth.  Throughout my life, because of these traditions, I have developed a deeper love for our Savior and what He did for me. Regardless if you want to follow my outline of Holy Week, or stick with the Traditions of Old, it is up to you.

Just remember, what matters most is that “He Lives!”
